I've been thinking about buying the new halo 3 zune. I wanted to know if the zunes were any good. I've had a ipod and it was a big waste of money.

  Zune is excellent. I had an iPod video and I find Zune to be much better and more practical. I never used the stopwatch. Never used the Address book. Stupid things that just took up space. The Zune is much better with radio, a bigger screen, wi-fi, and customizable backgrounds.

  I would suggest getting a regular Zune, though. Unless you are a die-hard fan of the Halo series, it will become very 'dated'

  well your zune will search for other zunes, the wireless on both must be turned on. you can send a song to the other, but i think it is limited to 3 plays/3 days.

  The iPod and Zune can be akin to a cat and dog. Neither one really like each other.

  To answer your question, if you've got music you bought off iTunes Music Store, then you can't transfer those to your Zune. It does not support the format iTunes uses, the software cannot interconnect. The two devices are "mortal enemies"

  If you've got music you copied off your own CD's or are in mp3 format, you can simply re-import them from your hard drive into the software the Zune uses.

  I've never really used either. I own an iPod but I bought it for hardware only. I'm running an entirely different operating system on it.

  I have two zunes connected to my home computer and I installed the second one with no problems. My wife and I share one library just as you describe.

  You have to use the installation disk just like you hooked yours up the first time, but on his computer this time. Jump through all the hoops and there will be two devices (with their nicknames and all) in the left hand menu within the Zune program.

  Then just click on the one that you wish to work with. All music should synchronize automatically.

  You may have to remove the Zune program from your computer first (my understanding is that a Zune device will only sync to one computer), otherwise it may wipe out all the files from your Zune Device.

  it is all about marketing...steve jobs and apple have done a GREAT job brainwashing people into thinking the ipod is the best media player on the market (when it was more expensive than most, had worse sound quality and lacked an FM tuner like most had)...this was the case even before the touch and the app store were available. they use celebs, flashy colors, and cool music to advertise...and microsoft....well, doesn't do anything.

  Strictly their own opinion.
  People tend to go for what they are familiar with, and if thats an iPod, so be it.
  Zune is rather new, and not many people have it.
  Once word gets out a bit about the Zune, i'm sure more people would prefer it to an iPod.

  you can use a range of software to get music umm limewire yeah lime wire sucks torrents are better download bitlord, u torrent kinda thing the look online like google "ur favorite band" torrent or discography if you want all the songs by that artist good sites the pirate bay, sumo torrent there are alot more site you can use. when downloading torrents make sure it has high seeders or it will never finish, or you can download a youtube to mp3 converter and download videos off of youtube some say sound quality isnt that good but personally i dont notice or there is the google hack i think it was intitle:"index of(band here)" you can upload any mp3 format on to a zune using the zune software as long as its not a protected file downloading anything isnt always safe but if you get avg free when using google it should tell you if the site is a reported attack site or not

It seems like they aren't selling Zune's anymore. If I go into a store they don't have them. And all accessories are 50% off right now.   they are discontinuing the current models and replaceing them with the zune HD.....but they still have invintory. my local stores (Best buy, Walmart, Target) all have at least a few of every size zune out there. you can also get them from the microsoft store. but you should get them ASAP as i have a feeling they will sell quickly after their price drop.

  Assuming it doesn't suffer something unusual like being stepped on or dunked in liquid, the typical problems involve either the battery (typical life: 2 - 3 years) or the hard drive, if you have the Zune 30 or 80GB models.

  The hard drives are somewhat sensitive to jarring and will sometimes stop working if banged around or dropped too many times.

  The smaller 4 and 8GB models are flash memory designs which are not sensitive to shock.

  Most likely, the battery will start to not hold a charge around the 2 year point, but it can be replaced (has to be done by a repair shop).

  Ipods will have the same reliability issues; they use many of the same parts and batteries.

  Transfering songs depends on whether your ipod songs are DRM-free or not. If they are DRM free, no issues. If there is DRM, first you need to "free" them. It takes more work, but it is doable.

  The reason they're selling only brown Zunes for cheaper is because the brown is less popular and they have a surplus of them. i bought one yesterday, it's a great deal, and if you're unhappy with the brown color, then just get a skin.
  If you want to buy one, then just know they aren't compatible with itunes, but you can get all the songs from your itunes to the Zune.

  You would have to get an adapter for the base not the cord. The ports on the Zune and iPod devices are proprietary. So unless that dock has an adapter that will convert the base for a Zune then no it won't work.

  I have had my brown Zune since they first came out. They recently upgraded the firmware which gave it an updated look which looks pretty good. I have all my music collection on it, tons of pictures, and even put quite a few movies on it too (nice when flying). I haven't experienced any problems with it and have enjoyed it thoroughly. I have been able to purchase music from multiple websites without any issues and transfer them to my Zune with no problem. I saw that advertisment too and I might go get another one at that price! Can't beat it. And 30 gigs is a lot of memory for the average user like me - and I have only used maybe a 5th of that already... it will hold a lot of music and pictures.

  What is the point of purchasing. If you are purchasing as a status symbol then by all means go with the Ipod. Otherwise avoid ipods, the software sucks, you are limited to using the itunes software only and the price is horrible.

  If you are purchasing to store and listen to music and maybe even some videos go with the Zune even if it is brown.

  You won't find many deals on ipods as Apple has a contracted price that limits retail stores from selling there products for less then a specified amount.

As stubbornly anti-Apple as I am, I decided to look at iPods first. Shuffles were too small, I didn't like the look of the current Nano, and the Classic was too chunky for my liking. Plus I might as well just get a Touch then. The thing about the Touch? I dunno, I just don't want one. At all.
Admittedly, there aren't really many options out there aside from iPods. In fact, everything except for the few Zunes left fail by my standards.
So it's down to the iPod vs. Zune debate I dealt with when I got this last Zune a few years ago. Back then, it was easy enough, but now, now that the Zune is being discontinued?
I'm not even 100% sure what that means, but something about that is warning me against getting a Zune. But there's nothing attractive at all in the iPods for me, and I'd take the Zune 32 any day.
If it weren't for this recent discontinuation. Although Best Buy is now running a sale because of that...
...is it worth getting though? Put aside your Apple fanboyism and tell me whether or not it's a really stupid idea to get a product that's being discontinued.

  The only downside to the Zune HD mp3 players will be, that apps will not be made for the Zune HD mp3 players any longer. Microsoft however, is not killing off the Zune Mp3 player line entirely. Microsoft is only eliminating the stand alone Zune mp3 players, like the Zune HD. Microsoft is killing off the Zune mp3 players to concentrate on there new Windows Phone 7 operating system for smart phones. Don't forget, that all Windows Phone 7 enabled phones, are fully enabled Zune mp3 players. Much like the i Phone is for i Pod's. Apple is moving in this direction as well. There is talk of eliminating the i Pod classic in the near term now. Also, the Zune market place is not going anywhere since it is needed to manage your music, and video's on the Windows 7 phones.

  The Zune is not dead. Only the stand alone players are. If you get a Zune mp3 player, it will still hook up to the Zune Market place just fine. Plus, Microsoft wants to start incorporating the market place even more into the Xbox 360 then it already is.

  PS. If you want apps though, you will have to get a Windows 7 enabled phone.

I'm very good at computers, I do designs on adobe photoshop along with photoediting, I'm proficient with Microsoft office Excel, Powerpoint, Word, I know how to delete viruses and cookies, I can set up wireless internet connections, I can fix networking connectivity problems, and I was an intern at Hypernova videogames aka Evil Genius Video games. I'm very good at math and reading, I have a hobby of learning other languages (I'm only fluent in English but I know some Japanese, Spanish, and French). I'm also very good at training cats and dogs, I've had 3 jobs as a cashier, and I am also a very good sales person when it comes to electronics. I have no previous experience selling computers, mp3 players, etc. employment-wise, but I have had multiple personal experiences. One, for example, was when I was at Best Buy with my dad getting a new computer. I overheard this guy talking to his wife about how he wasn't sure what kind of Ipod he wanted. I, personally, prefer Zunes. I've dealt with Ipods and I've dealt with Zunes so I walked over to him and I explained how although Ipods may seem better, they commony glitch, they're overpriced because the main "operating system" of the device takes up more memory than the Zune "operating system" program does. Thus allowing you to put more songs and videos onto the Zune. In addition, with the Ipod if you want one that has Video, Music, Pictures, Games and Radio like the Zune you would have to spend 0-0 and the screen wouldn't be as large as the zune screen, and it would most likely break within a year. Whereas a 6 Zune has Radio, games. video, pictures, etc. and you get over 80GB of memory and you can access more of the 80GB of memory than you would be able to access on a 80GB Ipod. Later, when my dad and I were at the front of the store checking the reciept for our purchase, we saw the same couple at a cashier paying for a zune.
I also used to intern at Dougals Catering as an assistant cook, and I interned at Hill Middle School as an 8th grade math teacher for the kids who had the most difficulty in math.
I have no college degrees, I have my high school GED, I do not have my Microsoft A+ certification but I know enough and will continue to learn just please someone give me a job! Please, I have no tickets on my record other than a wrongs to minor ticket that was given to us the day our daughter was taken because our house was messy even though we showed proof that the exterminators had come just beforehand and when they come to spray you have to move everything to the centers of each room. Do any MP3 players aside from iPods play games?
I’ve been looking at lots of different MP3 players recently, hoping to find one cheap and with everything I wanted (sounds like I’m asking for a lot, I know).

I ruled out iPods since they're extremely expensive, break easily (and you can’t replace the battery) anyways, ya, my last iPod broke quickly.

I’ve been looking at Creative (Zens), Zunes, sansa and really anything else on the market. I’m impressed with the expandable memory feature many have, though I don’t need too much memory right now (a 4 GB or maybe even a 2 GB ought to do it).

My only problem is that I cannot find a single MP3 player that plays games (other than iPods). I want to be able to do something active, not just stare out the window, while riding the subway or waiting for something. How has no other company realized people want games?
Am I weird in that I want games? Is that too much to ask?

OR, am I missing a key player that does have games (I'm hoping I am).

For X-Mas, my mum said that my brother and I could get new MP3 players. I'm love with the one I have now, the old Zune 30gb, but I know it's time to upgrade. My brother has my old, 2nd gen. iPod nano. The poor kid got a handmedown and hates it.

  There both good, but I would personally prefer the Zune. Remember that with the I Pod, any time you download a song, you have to load it into I Tunes before you can download it on your I Pod. Plus the
  I Pod's in general are considered to have inferior sound quality to the Zune players, according to web sites like Cnet.com, and other sites as well. The I pod's do have advantages as well, but I don't care for I tunes personally, because all the music is in the aac(advanced audio codec) instead of the mp3 format. So I can't take the music from an I pod and put it onto another device. Only the I Pod's use the aac format. And the deal breaker for me is that I Tunes music is copy protected, so I cant make copies and send the music to another computer or device. But this is just my opinion! You have to ultimately choose for your self, because you will get a million people telling you that one is better then the other, when in reality, it all comes down to opinion. I think you would be happy with either one personally.(Update) I decided to revisit this question after I realized that I Tunes is now Drm free. I completely forgot that they announced that they had removed the copy protection a year ago. They also updated the sound quality of there aac audio format, to sound much better. This was done because Amazon.com, had been selling mp3's that sounded better then the music I Tunes was selling. The Zune HD is Still rated as a better sounding mp3 player however. This has not changed.

I am using the Zune software (it's horrible! I can't figure anything out) for my music and to be synced to my zune. Here's what I've been doing:

I have two computers. One has about of iTunes music on it. The other is a new laptop. I also have a Zune. Zune Marketplace is on my laptop (I like it there). I took a ton of CD-RWs and burned my whole iTunes library onto them, then ripped them into the Zune software. It didn't find all the song information, like it should. I just calls them "Track 1", "Track 2" and so on. I clicked "Options" then "find all song info", and it said it was loading. It took about 4 seconds, then stopped. It said it was done. Believe it or not, it didn't work! Sitting there staring at me was about 140 tracks, named "Track 1" all the way to "Track 140". That isn't what I want.

Anyway, please help me. That completely ruins my music experiance.

  Limewire isnt directly compatible, per say, with the zune, but that doesnt quite matter as long as you have the mp3 and shoot it over to the zune software (provided you use it).

  What the feature is, basically, is when you have two zunes together in a room, they see eachother and you can send files back and forth via wireless connection. fairly self explanatory. however, after three listens or views of the files transferred, it deletes itself off of your zune due to copyright issues and microsoft kissing up to the record companies.

Why does Zune separate my mixed albums by artist?
I have albums that I personally mixed on my PC, but when I put them on my Zune the Zune won't keep them on one album.   It does that because you mixed them. If they were from a cd you bought from the store it wouldn't give you this problem.

  Try this it works 99% of the time.
  Go to My Documents>My Music>Zune. Create a folder for that album. Drag the music to that folder and delete the other folders Zune is putting it in. Then try editing the info in Zune program. This works for me when I'm importing music from cds that I've burned for individual artists..

  Creating a play list for them will be a lot easier.

  I like the monthly subscription service (zune Pass) that Zune offers (and iTunes doesn't) - it allows me to rent/sample music. Some people like to rent their music, and some don't. I am in the former category.

  Microsoft still doesn't have the same video deals that iTunes so you won't find videos available at the Zune marketplace. There are some download sites advertising Zune compatibility. But I haven't tried them. Zune Reactor is one of them.

  I rebooted my computer numerous times, each time I was able to put Zune songs back onto my Zune software. Here is what I do:

  1. Install the Zune software if you have not already done so.
  2. Plug in your Zune to the Computer via. Usb cable.
  3. A message may show up if you have plugged in the Zune for the first time since you have reboot your Zune. Make sure that you say that this will be your "new home" (Zune recognizes your rebooted computer as a "different" computer.
  4. After you Zune is recognized, go to devices on top of the menu screen.
  5. Go to "music"
  6. select all you music by screening down all you songs from beginning to end (what? is that called again when you click)
  7. Right click and select "Copy to my collection"
  8. Afterward, it will copy the songs to the Zune software and to the computer. Just go ahead and do something else while it syncs the songs back to the Zune software.

  This isn't an answer, but my computer did the exact same thing. On another computer, after downloading the software, it installed itself (that was XP), but on Vista, it is doing exactly what you describe.

Find the album and click on it. Click again to open the album. Right click on one of the pictures and go to properties. It will tell you where on your computer the pictures are now saved. If you want to move them then you can copy them and paste them to whatever folder you want. Just make sure you add the folder you are moving them to to the monitored folders lists. Otherwise when you delete them from that other folder they will disappear from your collection. When you add them to a new monitored folder and sync your Zune those pictures will get resynced again.

  I don't think there is a way to copy the Zune playlists. As for syncing the other stuff, I don't see any other way to sync back to the computer then manual. The good thing is you can highlight all the videos, music etc. You should be able to then right click and select copy to collection. As far as I know, that works.

  I'm not real familiar with Zunes, but my brother does have one. (I own a Zen Vision: M, which I love dearly.)

  But, it *should* ask/tell you if it's going to delete everything on your Zune. Just tell it not to delete anything. If you want to be on the super-safe side, just uninstall the software, and then plug in your Zune. Windows *should* recognized it at least as a removable drive, and then you could copy/paste all your stuff onto your new hard drive.

  It does have a TON of music, at least to me it does, and of course, they're mainly mainstream popular music.

  Though the Zune is still a new guy to the market, so eventually more music will come into it.

  MOST songs are downloadable. There were only a couple for me that I couldn't download. I tried out the 14-day trial of ZMP, and I liked it. There were a few songs, but not that many. Most songs worked for me.

  You do have to remember, this is a music RENTAL system. That means you pay a monthly fee, to keep on using the music you download. You can't just download them, and keep it forever without paying monthly fees. It's more cheaper than buying songs individually though.

  Oh, and even if you don't sync your Zune to the computer after the current ZunePass expires, they won't work anyways.

Admittedly, there aren't really many options out there aside from iPods. In fact, everything except for the few Zunes left fail by my standards.
So it's down to the iPod vs. Zune debate I dealt with when I got this last Zune a few years ago. Back then, it was easy enough, but now, now that the Zune is being discontinued?
I'm not even 100% sure what that means, but something about that is warning me against getting a Zune. But there's nothing attractive at all in the iPods for me, and I'd take the Zune 32 any day.

  The only downside to the Zune HD mp3 players will be, that apps will not be made for the Zune HD mp3 players any longer. Microsoft however, is not killing off the Zune Mp3 player line entirely. Microsoft is only eliminating the stand alone Zune mp3 players, like the Zune HD. Microsoft is killing off the Zune mp3 players to concentrate on there new Windows Phone 7 operating system for smart phones. Don't forget, that all Windows Phone 7 enabled phones, are fully enabled Zune mp3 players. Much like the i Phone is for i Pod's. Apple is moving in this direction as well. There is talk of eliminating the i Pod classic in the near term now. Also, the Zune market place is not going anywhere since it is needed to manage your music, and video's on the Windows 7 phones.

  The Zune is not dead. Only the stand alone players are. If you get a Zune mp3 player, it will still hook up to the Zune Market place just fine. Plus, Microsoft wants to start incorporating the market place even more into the Xbox 360 then it already is.

  Truly they will both give u the same sound quality.... It really depends on the bit rate of the song. Most songs on Itunes are at 128kps, which is about CD quality, and im not sure the bit rate for music on the Zune, but if its the same bit rate, they will both produce the same sound quality....

Good sound, i want to be able to use the best headphones and not let the hardware of my mp3 player limit the quality of my music.   I feel that the iPod is a better choice. Microsoft is probably not going to make any more Zunes, where as Apple is constantly updating their product lines. iTunes makes dragging and dropping songs very easy. I currently have a 5th gen iPod nano and I love it.

  Also, the quality of the music does not really depend on the player, more on the headphones you use. The headphones that come with the player have average sound quality. If you want superb, you will have to buy higher-quality headphones.

  Dont get a zune. As BOTH a zune AND ipod owner, I have experience with both

  1. Battery Life
  -Microsoft promised 30 hours audio only w/ wi-fi off. Cnet.com published results that attained 22 hours, roughly half that of an ipod classic 80 gb. I have actually tested this and I can say that cnet.com is correct

  2. Got rid of the equalizer
  -The zune 30 had a music equalizer and im pissed that microsoft got rid of it. Without a equalizer, your songs wont sound as good

  3. Microsft (ms) points
  -79 ms points=99 cents for a song. Thats confusing

  4. Online store availability
  -No movies or tv shows. Song selection half that of itunes. This is more important than you think

  5. Exclusive online store
  - Can't use other music services like napster, yahoo, rhapsody, etc. The thing that pisses me off is that these services are MICROSOFT BACKED!

  6. Hard Drive
  -Can't be used as an external hard-drive (complaint in the 1st generation, Microsoft didn't address this problem). Almost EVERY mp3 player has this feature

  7. No clock
  -This is more important than you think (Same as above)

  8. No games
  - This isn't really important, but the ipod has the upper hand on this one

  9. Screen Resolution
  - Its the same as the ipod's, but with the zune's bigger screen, anything visual on the screen will look noticebaly "fuzzy"

  - Microsoft doesn't update their media player software as frequently as apple. So if something buggy goes on, you may be in the dark for months if it cannot be fixed

Yes, the iPod is the ruler. And Zune will never catch up, in my opinion. But I do like my Zune, that is why I keep it around even now that I have an iPhone. The Zune serves well on long trips, the battery last longer than the iPhone. However, the iPhone can do so much more, thus sucking the battery life.

  on the contrary....music file sound totally different on my zune HD than they do on my touch...the zune HD is very detailed and crisp, while the touch seems very washed out and heavy on the bass and treble.

  if you are a music lover, get the HD....the touch will disappoint you greatly if you get it for mainly music. the HD lets you find new artists quickly and easily, plus /month gets you UNLIMITED music downloads.

  Of course the zune is gunna get more apps, it only has so few cuz it came out just last month. The zune has much better screen quality, sound quality is mostly the same (theres really no way you could tell a difference without some kind of robotic aid), and the zune is smaller. The zune also comes with HD radio that doesn't require you to be in a wifi hotspot like the ipod does. iPod has a moderately faster web browser, and comes with a speaker on the device unlike the zune which requires headphones. Basically, it depends on what you think looks better, and which company you support more: Microsoft=Zune, Apple=iPod. People usually say that the zune is overall (other than fewer apps, a slightly slower web browser, and the lack of a speaker) better device than the iPod.

  The Zune and the iPod are very similar in comparison, in my personal opinion I have an iPod but my cousin has a Zune and the Zune is WAY better. The sound quality is better but I think the handling or the way you control a Zune is alot easier. I don't know exactly on moving all your iTunes songs to your Zune..but I know just much as people with iPods need iTunes...people with Zune need the Zune program..

  In terms of audio quality, a Mp3 encoded at a bit rate of 320kbps will sound 1 to 1 with a CD to human ears. That's not to say that the CD doesn't sound better then the 320kbps Mp3 though, because the CD does in fact sound better. It's just that are hearing is not good enough to pick out the superior CD sound. The Zune HD is well known to have better audio quality then the i Pods, due to it's superior audio chipset. So even if the i Pod is using the Aiff lossless format which is the same as Wav for the PC, it is not going to sound as good as the 320kbps Zune HD. But don't for get that the Zune does support a wider range of audio formats then the i Pods. The Zune HD will play back Wma, Wma pro, Wma lossless, AAC/m4a, and Mp3. So the Zune can play songs that were bought on the i Tunes store for example. You would just have to copy the song from i Tunes to a folder on your computer, or Windows Media Player. Now i Pods in turn, cant play Wma files of any kind. A Zune HD will also play back both MP4 video, and WMV video.

  i Pods are geared for the average consumer who looks at having a device with unlimited app support. While audiophiles tend to prefer the Zunes.

  Windows Media Player by the way, will rip Cd's into Wma lossless by the way. (Which the Zune HD does support.)

  Note: i Tunes will convert Wma into AAC that the i Pod will understand, but unfortently it does cause a slight loss in audio fidelity. Audiophiles tend to look down on this process.

  Also, there are multiple lossless audio codecs that do exist. The Zune HD can handle Wma lossless, while the i Pod can handle Apple lossless (ALAC) or also known as Apple lossless audio codec. Now all lossless audio codecs are eaqual to each other in terms of sound quality. The only difference is that some lossless codecs support compression, while others don't. Also some are exclusive to either PC or Mac. (But all are 100% true lossless.)

  They both have really cool features, but I haven't seen anyone review a production model of either player yet. I like that the Sony X series has the built-in noise canceling technology along with a Slacker Radio and youtube app built right in to the interface. They also seem to have the best battery life ratings for their players and the sound quality is always great. I'm not cure what the sound quality is like on the Zune, but the HD radio feature is pretty cool. I don't remember if the Z series has an OLED screen like the Zune or not, but the Zune's screen looks really nice and bright. They also haven't released pricing for the Zune yet, and I'm really curious to know what that will be. The Sony player is priced right along with the iPod Touch I believe. From what I've seen of the two players so far, I would lean toward the Sony X series, but the Zune looks pretty cool as well. I need a new music player, traditional MP3s just aren't doing it for me (both seem to have the same problem of audio not coming out of the right ear piece.. When I turn the headphone jack, I can sometimes get the sound to come back through the right ear piece. It has happened to both my MP3s, I tested multiple headphones. Anyway, I can no longer jog with it when this issue occurs) So I am ready to buy an Ipod or Zune. Due to very similar prices, I am leaning towards an Ipod, mainly because of all the other features it has.

  I would suggest the Iphone, only due to the fact that it serves more than 1 purpose. But I'm in the military and currently in Iraq, I took my Iphone with me and I have had no problems, I run with it out here, take it to the gym and workout and yet it still works. As you know the temp out here ranges from extremely hot to cold and like I said, it still works. I know other Soldiers that crossed over and either bought Iphones once they went on leave just for the music purpose and others that have bought the Ipod's because their previous MP3 player failed to work out here. So once again I would highly suggest the Iphone. Also remember to get a case to protect either your Iphone or Ipod, that way if you do drop it by accident your screen and phone will be protected.

  I have a Zune(the first one so its pretty thick) and the sound quality is 100 times better than the ipod

  yes you can save previously downloaded music to the zune.

  The newer model zunes are as thin as the ipods now so they are not that thick and all. The coating on them allows you to touch all over them without leaving behind fingerprints.

  The only difference between zune and ipod right now is the FM tuner.

  The zune marketplace is okay, I never use it because I stal music from Shareaza.

  the clarity on the Zune screen is very bright and clear and is bigger than the ipods screen so its easier to watch movies.

  Zune -
  What it does: You can play videos, listen to music, download podcast,TV shows, and music - with Microsoft points or the Zune pass.

  Pros:
  - Easy to use software
  - Ability to allow users to order a subscription for unlimited music downloads + 10 free songs a month for the price of 15 dollars (same amount of money to buy a CD now-a-days)
  - Video Marketplace has a wide variety of TV shows.

  Cons:

I know this question has been asked in one form or other, but let me put a disclaimer first so we don't go off-base - I've owned an iPod Touch (2nd Gen) for a couple years so i know all about the variety of apps on the ipod touch/iphone and on the Touch 4th gen, it actually has a camera too unlike the Zune HD- but I have a smartphone with those features so I don't really care for that on my media player - I'm more interested in my media experience. I recently lost my iPod touch and my choices for replacement are another ipod Touch (4th Gen) and Zune HD. This is the first time I'm even considering a microsoft product for my entertainment but I'd like to hear thoughts on the actual music (and pod-cast, radio, audio-book) experience on the Zune HD vs the iPod touch, preferably from someone who's used both. I used the "Genius" feature a lot on the iPod to generate my songlists, heard the Zune has a similar feature called "Smart-DJ" - how well does it compare? I had a chance to play with a zune HD at a bestbuy and was blown away by the GUI, but I'd like to know just how much of a competitor it is to the iPod (media-wise). Also, I listen to podcasts a lot, I heard the zune is abit annoying when dealing with podcasts - anyone have any thoughts on this?
PS - Also need to know how well the Zune deals with AudioBooks - I heard it doesnt differentiate between audiobooks and other music files?

  Get the Zune HD for a superior media experience. Most tech reviewers will tell you the Zune has the better, more focused media capabilities. You can output full HD to t.v.'s (something the touch won't and probably won't ever be able to do.) Having both the iTunes and Zune software, I can say the Zune software handles podcasts just fine, even better than iTunes. Also, the Zune HD does have apps, albeit there are just a handful, compared to Apple's store. The Smart-DJ function also blows the so called Genius function out of the water.

  I am slightly biased towards the Zune here, but I do own a Zune 80, and an older generation ipod nano. So I have both iTunes and Zune software.

  In quality they are both the same, except the Zune is new and has a good chance of being problematic, like almost all new tech-gadgets. The ipod has been around since 2001 and the video has been out over a year, meaning that apple has fixed all the ipod problems. I terms of performance, they both are great and have great features. The ipod will have a little better performance. The ipod has the easiest way to download songs because the itunes music store is so massive and has so much material. Plus you can always use limewire for downloading. The ipod is the best of the two, in my opinion. Hope this helps.

  it's simply because the generation... the 30gig you are looking at is the 1st generation zune and the 8gig is the 2nd gen there should also be a second gen 30gig released soon if not already. i imagine the 2nd gen has more functionality but the price is mainly because it's newer.

  I have a Zune; first and foremost, do not listen to the people who say ipods are better. Zunes work just as well, if not better than ipods.

  1. Yes; you just drag your music onto the Zune software or you can change your settings so that your software picks up ALL music on your computer. You can burn or take songs off of a CD if you like.

  2.As for playlists I am not 100% because I do not make playlists; you should go to zune.net to check.

  3. My Zune typically lasts for two or three days when I forget to charge it; which is all the time.

  4. Different Zunes work differently. I have the the 80GB and I can just softly run my finger over the navigating button and t goes up, down, or sideways. There are three buttons. The navigating button in the middle, and the back button on the left and the play or pause button on the right.

  5. Zunes do not have a load time. They come on automatically.

  1. the ipod 120GB is thinner and a little shorter than the Zune 120.

  2. you can use music downloaded from frostwire, limewire, amazon ect...it does not need to be downloaded from the zune marketplace. and the /month is an option...not manditory so you know...they also have buy by the track/album options like itunes has

  3. Zune uses the Zune software which is very nice looking...a bit of a memory hog but not terrible...my old computer has no problems running it.

  I love my Zune 120GB....i have lots of movies on my zune to fill up the space and watching them on that tiny 2.5" ipod screen would be terrible...the 3.2" zune screen is massive compaired to the ipod screen. you also get better sound quality, more supported formats, better build materials, wireless marketplace, wireless zune to zune sharing, and wireless syncing....overall it is a better product....even Cnet agrees....the zune 120GB won the "prize fight" thing they do.

  I say the ZuneHD, it has HD playback, an beautiful 3.1" OLED touchscreen, HD radio, Internet Explorer for internet browsing. Games, Music, Videos, Pictures, Apps, you name it. They are available in 16 (up to 4000 songs) and 32 GB (up to 8000 songs) models. They are priced at 9 and 9 for the two models.

  Since you mainly use Windows Media Player (WMP), it will be very easy to switch from WMP to the Zune software since they both use the same file formats and etc.

  If you go with the iPod all your music will have to be converted to ACC or MP3 to play on an iPod, with a Zune you wont have to do that.

My friend wants either an Ipod or a Zune but she doesn't have a computer and wants to use mine to add songs to it. From what I understand about Ipod, it will sync to iTunes when updated, so the files must remain there or be taken off the iPod. I don't really want all her files on my computer at all times when she won't even update it that often. Does it work like that?

I used to have an old, generic mp3 player that you could simply add and delete mp3 files either through drag and drop or adding and deleting them using windows media player, and are therefore more independent of the files on the computer. What mp3 players out there now are more similar to this? Would a Zune do this, or would it be like the iPod?

  You don't have to keep all her songs with an iPod nor with a Zune, as long as iTunes or the Zune software is set to manually sync rather than auto-sync. I wouldn't assume, either, she won't be using your computer that often. If anything goes wrong with a player like these, she will be back on your computer wanting to put all those songs back on again, for example. Things go wrong with iPods all the time, and one thing I hate about Zunes is how even on manual sync sometimes songs end up deleted from my player (I think this is because of the Zune software, not the player, as the original Zune software never deleted songs from my player unless I wanted it to). Also, unless she buys a wall charger, she might want to use your computer to charge her player.

  The kind of mp3 player out there that is just drag-and-drop are flash-based mp3 players. So, she could do an internet search for flash-based ones, which means they are almost like usb flash drives that happen to play music. I know there are Sansa mp3 players like this, because I looked specifically for that kind of player to buy for my father since they're way easier to use in all aspects than Zunes, iPods and other non-flash players. I got him a Sansa Clip. Zunes nor iPods are flash-based, so you have to use their software to put songs on.

  well first off you dont want to move it to windows media player... you need to move it to the Zune Media Player, which comes with your zune, or download it from zune.net.

  and then you need to make sure your files are in mp3 format(or WMA), just not AAC. iTunes does a great job of converting files btw.

  So go into the zune software and change your monitored folders to the ones where your music is stored and just let it add on its own...

  1. Directly to Zune, yes. iPod and iTunes don't support WMA though, they use the inferior AAC.

  I think iTunes will convert some, but it won't be like the original. It's better to put it on a CD and rip.

  2. You can't transfer playlists to either, sorry.

  3. I think the Zune battery lasts longer than the iPods. Neither are easily replacable.

  4. I find the Zune's method is much quicker. It uses a neat crossbar UI so it's easy to jump across areas in the Zune's interface. The iPod Classic can lag a bit.

  5. Neither have a significant load time.

  Overall, I'd just recommend the Zune.

  You don't have to rip your CDs again. The ipod supports both wmv and mp4s. It is very easy to load your existing library to either of the two.

The format of the menu and screen saver makes you enjoy the music more not only from a listening point but from a visual also, there are pictures and bio you could read from each artist or band (mostly all). The interface is quick and easy to use, the OLED screen is to die for, the video quality is exceptional.

  Only bad thing (to ipod people), there are not that many apps, but they are working on it (iPod did not have that much apps when they came out with the touch)...to me I don't care about apps, don't need 1,000 apps on my player...

  the Zune is a great player for just watching videos and listening to music. The sound and screen are great. However, if you want apps, the Zune HD isn't for that. It has apps, but there is only about 42 apps. It can browse the internet, though.

  Sure, the Zune is a great device that sometimes conquers the iPod that it can't do. But with the lack of most things that the Zune line doesn't have and the iPods have is a sure bummer. Now, I'm going to tell you the importance of both. With the Zune HD, you could listen to music from both your library and the radio, stunningly, watch videos and look at pictures with it's OLED screen, but with the lack of apps, and the sluggish browser, is kind of a bummer. But with the low prices, these line of devices are a good deal.
  With the iPod Touch, you could do that, but without the OLED screens (not sure), but with tones of apps in the app store, and with the lightning fast browswer, you can't go wrong with that, if you want to pay more for your device.

  So the bottom line is that, if you want your device is just to listen to music, watch videos, you would want the Zune, but if you want your device to have a speedy browser, and lots of apps, you would want the iPod Touch.

I'm torn between the two, honestly I was always a ZUNE person, I had the first Zune at release, and LOVE the ZUNE software. (Really is wayyyy better) Also the game function sounds cool but has yet to actually materialize.

But the shitload of apps for iTouch, and it actually makes the Zune HD look tiny, make me feel like theres just something missing from the ZUNE HD....and if I put a bunch of movies on it like before, I'd prefer the larger iTOUCH screen.

Soo I was going to get an iTouch this summer, maybe sometime in August, then I just find out Zune going to come out with a touch screen ! sept 8 is the date, and I don't mind waiting.   it all really depends on what you're looking for in an mp3/pmp player.

  personally. the ipod is a waste of time for me. i don't care about the apps, games, or all that other garbage on it; i have a cellphone that does all that stuff.

  if you strip all that stuff off the ipod touch, you pretty much get the zune. BUT the zune comes with hd support, and and OLED screen which will give you a longer battery life in the long run. the verdict is still out on the sound quality. but from what i've experienced, anything is better than and ipod.

  the user interface on the zune looks alot better than the ipod. and its got a monster processor, so you can expect games. i dont think there's bluetooth on the zune, but i hate bluetooth anyways; its just one more thing you have to plug in and charge. there's HD radio on the zune, which will most likely catch on in the next few years. the wifi is pretty much standard nowadays. i prefer the zune.

  so, it all really depends on what you're looking for.

  Most reviewers have never used both so you won't find users who can give a fair review of anything but the one that they own and then they slam the other. For someone who has never used either, you therefore can't really make an educated choice based on reviews but rather only on specs and prices. Factoring in both specs and prices, the Zune HD, being an HD display looks like the better choice at first glance. If you go one step further and consider that HD content that is only compatible with the Zune HD, you also need to factor in that HD content is much more expensive than SD AND that HD files are as much as three times the size of SD. At that point, it's not possible to even compare the prices of comparable capacities because the Zune HD would have to be roughly three times that of the iPod Touch. Or the alternative would be to only use SD content on the Zune HD, in which case you're paying for a display that isn't going to be used to potential. And, of course, the apps are a big part of what makes any wi-fi enabled device. While there are loads and loads of useless stupid apps for the iPod Touch and many free ones, at least the choices are there.

im not much of a fan of apple. ive owned the itouch previously and it was too bulky and i just didnt like it. I heard the zune has great video for movies, and great sound quality, hd local radio, and 14.99 a month unlim music DL. now i use my phone for apps, so the lack of apps from zune doesnt bother me. plus ive heard its a bit lighter, smaller, and battery lasts a bit longer. I also dont mind that there is not external speaker source like the itouch, but thats fine with me as i will be using headphones.

  See you said beside the App store, which as an Zune HD owner I will say the Zune hardly has.

  Now for everything else I will give you a comparison of both players by several key factors. Music Quality, Video Quality, User Interface, and Overall Quality.

  Now when It comes to Music, the iPod Touch seems to care more about its apps then its sound quality. The Zune totally beats the iPod with sound quality.

  For Video Quality the Zune has the iPod beat BADLY, first the OLED screen on the Zune is phenomenal. A side by side comparison of just the screen quality has the iPod lacking greatly. Next you have the Nvidia Tegra(yes the same Nvidia that makes high-end graphics cards) Graphics procession unit. Which is the most powerful graphics chip ever put in a MP3 player. It can play videos of 720P HD with bitrates up to 10MBs, that beats the iPods max video performance of 540P 2.5MBs. While both require a dock to see videos of max quality, they still play an important factor in video quality. Not to mention the Nvidia chip on the Zune HD is powerful enough to play 3D Xbox games.

  The User Interface might be a little more difficult to learn, but once you learn it, it certainly beats the iPod Touch. It is slick and very responsive, and has lots of amazing features that you wont see on other MP3 players.

  The Overall Quality is given to the Zune again. First off its made out of anodized aluminum that is very hard to scratch and looks, in the long run, better then the chrome back of the iPod. (which also shows everything under the sun, dirt, grim, fingerprints, you name it)

  Lastly for a bonus, the software for the computer itself beats iTunes anyday. First off its not a computer hog, and second you can actually share music between other Zunes, with an iPod you cant.

  Now just to give you a slight background on me. I have owned and tested over 10 MP3 player types. Including using the iPod Touch for over 20 hours, and iTunes, sadly for several months. When I bought my first Zune in 2008, I soon figured out there was no going back. Sold my original 8GB Zune last year and now I sport an great 16GB Zune HD, 4 months and NO problems.

Sooo I posted a previous question asking what kind of Ipod should I get tomorrow (technically today) and then it occurred to me that there is also Zune. So, to all of you music fanatics, what would you chose? Not sure whether or not I'm Guenna go for the Ipod Classic or the Itouch, but I've heard that the Classic is compared to the Zune 120GB, and the Itouch was compared to the Zune HD. So with that being said, which out of those four would you chose and why? Help is always appreciated!

  it really depends...right off the bat i have to throw out the ipod classic tho as the 120GB zune is just all around a much better player (larger screen, better sound quality, better build materials, wireless marketplace, wireless syncing and sharing, ect..)

  as for the touch screen players it is all what you are into....
  if you plan on playing lots of games, get the touch. but if you plan on using it for music and movies, get the Zune HD.

  that being said, i have owned all 3 devices you have mentioned...what do i use the most you ask....the HD. the screen on the HD is simply AMAZING, and blows away the other devices screens in this comparrison. also the sound quality is equally as good as the screen quality. games on the HD are all FREE and are actually pretty good and addicting. internet is fast on the HD, the keyboard works great, the accelerometer flips the screen almost instantly.

  also the software the zune uses is superior and much easier to use than itunes.....i am a pretty tech savy guy and i have a hard time figuring out itunes and how to use it properly...while the zune is super simple and easy to do.

  it all comes down to your preference....i suggest the HD to ppl interested in music and movies, and the ipod touch for game/app addicts, and the zune 120GB for ppl that want to put EVERYTHING they own on their player. i had 5000 songs and like 40 movies on my 120GB and only used up like 36GB or something...it was rediculous. but the internet and games and screen make up for the lack of memory available in the HD (compaired to the 120GB that is)

  It can't hurt to wait the three months for it to come out. If you like the basics of the Zune 8, the Zune HD will only improve on it.

  I would buy the thing for battery life alone. It will have an OLED which has better battery life than an LCD. The Zune HD will also use the Nvidia Tegra as its processor. It is one of the most powerful mobile processors on the market and the way it is designed also makes it incredibly energy efficient.

  The firmware it will be running is based off of Windows CE/ Windows Mobile so the apps which were already developed for those should be easily ported over. And I doubt MS would bother to put the Tegra in there and only have it play music and videos. The XNA Game Studio already makes it easy to develop games for the Zune and it wouldn't be surprising if they made some Xbox games work with the touchscreen.

  Zunes don't get viruses. Just putting that out there.

I have had a zune 80gb and a zune 30gb and i didn't have a problem with either besides my 80gb freezing up but you can restart it to solve that problem.   You could get the iPod touch. It's basically a iPhone without the bill and phone. However, it has more memory, 32 gb, for its price. If you want more memory, you could get the classic with 160 gb. If you are active or accident prone, I wouldn't recommend it. The classic has a hard drive and has moving parts. If you shake it or drop it, you could break it. Also, it has a small screen. As for the zune, if you want freedom to use any media player or buy from stores other than itunes, you could get that. All in all, I would get the iPod touch.

  Probably not, iPods have a 30-pin connector on the bottom which is pretty unique to that device. and if you look at the path iphones are moving down with having external devices, theres a good reason why that 30-pin connector is standard on apple mobile devices. if you are just going from the headphone audio output on the iphone or zune it will work fine.

I am at a pickle here. I dont know which one I should get. The details on the zune are pretty much out. But the itouch is still in its shady state.

So far I am thinking the zune is pretty good. Its looks and seems decent. I will probably go with it if Apple cant beat there price. Currently the 16 gb zune sells for the same as the current 8 gb Ipod touch . But that all can change.

The main plus about Ipod though is that its got 3 years of experience while the Zune HD is just starting out. Having cameras on the touch seems cool. Well the cats out of the bag on pricing. I was hoping for even pricing then I may have sided with apple. It was announced that there will be a 8gb Itouch for 0 while the Zune HD 16gb is 0. It doesn't take a scientist to account for the big upgrade of space for such a small price.

  zunes have always been one of the better sounding MP3 players out there...much better than the ipod lineup. so it should be just as good as the sony. i was also considering the sony...that was until i got my hands on one. the interface was "clunky" and just outdated and UI was not as "pretty" as the zune HD's.....plus for or so, it was a no brainer for me. you are also getting HD radio on top of FM radio, wireless syncing and sharing and wireless marketplace, glass screen, scratch resistant backing, user friendly software that works and looks great. 720P HD output, nice xbox360 intigration, larger screen, and double storage capacity for less....is this even a real question...haha....any way you look at it, the zune wins out.

8GB iPod Touch vs. 30GB Zune?
I have been planning to get the iTouch for a while now, but recently came across the 30GB Zune which comes at a lower price. Do both have Wi-Fi internet access? Which is better in your opinion? I just want to watch movies, listen to music and use the internet at home. However, the fact that the Zune has waaay more memory space at a much cheaper price throws me off. Why is this?

i need some help. im debating on getting the ipod touch and the zune 8gb. I dont know though. i heard the zune has games, anyone have one to tell me what kinds of games it has. I know that th itouch has GREAT games, and you can use the internet. but in the zune u can't go on the internet.

  I picked the Zune over the iPod Touch because

  1. Nice design - Both are very nice looking, but I think the Zune is better. It's different, yet cool, and the iPod Classic has too much of a utilitarian look to it, and isn't as inviting.

  2. Hardware - Definitely Zune. The brushed aluminum backside is really scratch free (Apple uses the other scratch-prone aluminum back). The plastic front of the Zune has a nice solid texture. The Zune has a BIGGER glass screen. Makes video viewing great.

  3. UI - The user interface on the Zune is much more better and intuitive. The iPod Classic still uses that menu system where you have to keep "digging" in and out to get where you want. Zune one ups it by making it very easy to find what you want in one category, and gets you back to the home screen faster.

  4. Customizability - You can change the background of the menu(easy to identify and looks cool), get your Zune a nickname (you have to register, and hope noone else took it), get special laser engraving at Zune Originals ( https://zuneoriginals.net/ ), cases, accessories, and the usual.

  5. FM Radio - You can catch radio talk shows, news, sports, radio contests, new music, and a bunch of other radio content with the FM Radio. You can also buy a song from a radio station, if there's RDS offered.

  6. WiFi - You can share songs and pictures with other Zune owners, wirelessly connect to your PC, access the Marketplace store, and instantly update your podcasts

  7. Software (computer) - I personally like to manage my music in the Zune software better. iTunes really looks like old spreadsheets compared to the Zune program. Again, the UI on the desktop software is pretty smooth, slick, and simple to go around. Nice transitions, and you can even change the background theme. Also, it uses LESS memory, so it's not as as bad on system resources.

  8. Store - iTunes does have more content, I'll admit. But the offerings on Zune aren't bad. It has almost all the tracks that iTunes has, and there's some TV shows and music videos offered (Increasing every week!). Browsing through Zune Marketplace is cool though! Popular artists have special pages and it looks really neat to browse through. Finding content is much more easier for me. You can also access the store on your device.

  9. Zune Pass - This is an optional way of getting music from the store. Instead of traditionally buying music, you can RENT music for .99 a month. You have access to almost all of the store's music tracks, and you can download as many tunes as you want onto your device. After a month, you do have to pay .99 to keep your subscription running, or else your songs don't work. But it's a great legal way to get tons of music, for a rather cheap price.If that's not your thing, each song cost 79 points each (99 cents).

  No it cannot, the itouch can with the support of all the core features of the original YouTube.

  Plus the HD screen is annoying with the black background because you always see your reflection on the screen I hate it.
  With the itouch the screen is covered in icons so you don't have that problem and if you jailbreak you can change the wallpaper.

  But no the zine HD can't cause it sucks and is Microsoft obvious fail to compete with apple.

  I recommend the ZuneHD over Itouch from personal experience, it has better quality to everything, from using both my 16 gb Itouch and ZuneHD but remember if you want apps and videos, stick with touch, better quality everything and HD radio, ZuneHD, though new 3rd party apps, may make youtube possible in the near future. 3rd Party apps ( about 100-150) are alot for the ZuneHD though minute to Itouch's app collection.

It beats the ipod classic in every aspects. To compare it the itouch, it has way more space 80gb vs 16gb. They itouch may looks better but it costs way more (150dollars more for the 16gb itouch).

Also comes with Premium Earphones worth 39 dollars. The zune 2 audio output is already wayy better than ipod's. With the premium earphones, it will be day and night difference.

  Saying the Zune 2 beats Ipod classic is like saying I can beat a honda civic with a mustang, of coarse you can but there are about abillion cars in between those. There are players already out that are better then the both of them. The Zen Vision M has won awards with Cnet for like 2 or 3 years straight. 8GB vs. 32GB iPod Touch?
I'm most likely going to be getting an iTouch for my birthday, and I'm not sure of whether to get the 8 or 32 gb model. I've read that the 32gb one is the 3rd generation and is up to 50% faster than the 8gb which is only the 2nd generation? Is it really noticeable to where it's worth shelling out the extra 0?

I'm not much of a hardcore gamer...I plan on using the iTouch for checking my email/using Facebook continuously, along with using various apps I find like Tap Tap or something.

I have a Zune 30 right now, and I've already used 6 gigabytes of it, if that helps.

  I have a 8GB Touch G3. I don't notice the "Its really a G2" processing speed loss. I've also owned a Touch G1 and thats also pretty quick. It'll be the least of your worries. Memory wise,You'll probably carry over those 6GB of music and from experience, I'll tell you it truly sucks to be dangling near the edge of your memory. That said, you'll carry over that music and only have two gigs available for apps. If you're like me, you might go app crazy. These games are also pretty big. Basically what I'm saying, get the 32GB if you've got someone else purchasing it for you. As much as I hate to persuade anyone to give Apple MORE of their money.

So, about a month ago I dropped my iPod touch first gen. for the billionth time, but this time the screen broke. My dad said he'd try and get it fixed for me and he sent it to some place where they fix iPods (no, he didn't send it to Apple) but they sent it back saying that we have to pay 0; and yeah, there is no way my dad is paying that much money to get it fixed. So I'm thinking of saving up money to buy a second generation iTouch because I loved my first generation sooo much. But then I thought that maybe if I bought the Zune, I'd be getting more than if I bought an iPod. So basically what I'm asking is, which do you think is better? Zunes or iPods? Pros & Cons of both, tell me what you think.

  I have the zune 120 gb and love it. It's 0, holds 30,000 songs, and has better sound quality than the ipod touch. It has wifi, and while you can't go on the internet, there is a marketplace in which you can buy songs straight from your player, like the itouch. It also has a radio, and if you like the song thats playing, you just click buy and it will download it for you. It's still a big screen for watching videos, and can hold a lot more than the itouch.   Pros:
  -Slick,small and light device
  -Great touch screen
  -The BEST web browser on a portable device
  -Amazing video/music playback

  -No bugs and annoying stuff a very reliable hardware
  -64GB Flash based mp3 player

  Cons:
  -Not much of an upgrade over 2G (people were disappointed because they did not get upgrades like camera/OLED/etc)
  -Weaker battery, only lasts 30 hours for music playback versus 2G iPod touch 36 Hours music playback
  -Expensive for the 64GB version
  -Still no FM radio without the use of online applications
