Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Windows Media Player vs Zune Software vs Media Center?
I have 3 media options on my computer right now. I have the all purpose Media Player, the Television connecting Media Center, and the Zune compatible Zune Software. Could someone please provide the pros and cons to each maybe, and help me decide which should be my preferred choice? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
      WMP -
What it does: You can play videos, listen to music, and online radio. Basically everything WINamp can do.
Doesn't recognize mac formats (i.e. .mov)

Pros: Don't really think there are any pros or cons, essentially a basic player, not as complex as iTunes, Media Center or even Zune.
      Kind of the standard.

      Zune -
What it does: You can play videos, listen to music, download podcast,TV shows, and music - with Microsoft points or the Zune pass.

      Pros:
      - Easy to use software
      - Ability to allow users to order a subscription for unlimited music downloads + 10 free songs a month for the price of 15 dollars (same amount of money to buy a CD now-a-days)
      - Video Marketplace has a wide variety of TV shows.
      - Can connect to XBox 360 wireless-ly

      Cons:
      - You can't use this software to connect to any other Mp3 player.
      - Subscription only doesn't allow download of full market place, some songs you may still have to buy.
      - Videos not included with Subscription service.
      - Doesn't recognize some Mac formats (i.e. .Mov)

      Media Center:
Not necessarily the best media option in my opinion, unless you need a DVR. If you don't want the Zune as your media option go WMP, anyways here are the pros + cons

      Pros:
      - Very User Friendly
      - When connected to your TV can double as a DVR
      - Can connect to XBox 360 wireless-ly

      Cons:
      - Slows down computer at times
      - Not compatible certain formats (i.e. .Mov)
      - Cannot transfer music to + from ANY Mp3

I'm pretty sure CDs using the Zune software will work with your CD player.

  5. QUESTION:
Zune HD Vs Ipod Touch 4G? (strictly Media Experience comparison)?
I know this question has been asked in one form or other, but let me put a disclaimer first so we don't go off-base - I've owned an iPod Touch (2nd Gen) for a couple years so i know all about the variety of apps on the ipod touch/iphone and on the Touch 4th gen, it actually has a camera too unlike the Zune HD- but I have a smartphone with those features so I don't really care for that on my media player - I'm more interested in my media experience. I recently lost my iPod touch and my choices for replacement are another ipod Touch (4th Gen) and Zune HD. This is the first time I'm even considering a microsoft product for my entertainment but I'd like to hear thoughts on the actual music (and pod-cast, radio, audio-book) experience on the Zune HD vs the iPod touch, preferably from someone who's used both. I used the "Genius" feature a lot on the iPod to generate my songlists, heard the Zune has a similar feature called "Smart-DJ" - how well does it compare? I had a chance to play with a zune HD at a bestbuy and was blown away by the GUI, but I'd like to know just how much of a competitor it is to the iPod (media-wise). Also, I listen to podcasts a lot, I heard the zune is abit annoying when dealing with podcasts - anyone have any thoughts on this?
PS - Also need to know how well the Zune deals with AudioBooks - I heard it doesnt differentiate between audiobooks and other music files?

    • ANSWER:
Get the Zune HD for a superior media experience. Most tech reviewers will tell you the Zune has the better, more focused media capabilities. You can output full HD to t.v.'s (something the touch won't and probably won't ever be able to do.) Having both the iTunes and Zune software, I can say the Zune software handles podcasts just fine, even better than iTunes. Also, the Zune HD does have apps, albeit there are just a handful, compared to Apple's store. The Smart-DJ function also blows the so called Genius function out of the water.

I am slightly biased towards the Zune here, but I do own a Zune 80, and an older generation ipod nano. So I have both iTunes and Zune software.

  6. QUESTION:
    I-Pod vs Zune?
Ok, so I just bought one of those new 30GB Microsoft Zune digital media player, but i'm not sure anymore if i should have bought an I-Pod Video (also 30GB). When i decided to buy the Zune, the guy at the store made it sound like it was way better than the I-Pod, but i'm just not sure.

Can someone plz tell me which one of the two, I-Pod Video or Zune, is better in terms of quality, performance and also better for downloading songs? I would really appreciate it , thx .

    • ANSWER:
I think that they are about the same when it comes to quality. But i think that the zune is pretty cool. You can share music and pictures to your friends with an infared ray.. thats pretty cool.. but the onlky thing that I detest is that they delete any songs that aren't played within three days. Rather retarded... I'dke to keep my songs until I delete them myself...

  7. QUESTION:
I-Pod video VS. Microsoft Zune...i need help plz!?
Ok, so I just bought one of those new 30GB Microsoft Zune digital media player, but i'm not sure anymore if i should have bought an I-Pod Video (also 30GB). When i decided to buy the Zune, the guy at the store made it sound like it was way better than the I-Pod, but i'm just not sure.

Can someone plz tell me which one of the two, I-Pod Video or Zune, is better in terms of quality, performance and also better for downloading songs? I would really appreciate it , thx .

    • ANSWER:
In quality they are both the same, except the Zune is new and has a good chance of being problematic, like almost all new tech-gadgets. The ipod has been around since 2001 and the video has been out over a year, meaning that apple has fixed all the ipod problems. I terms of performance, they both are great and have great features. The ipod will have a little better performance. The ipod has the easiest way to download songs because the itunes music store is so massive and has so much material. Plus you can always use limewire for downloading. The ipod is the best of the two, in my opinion. Hope this helps.

  8. QUESTION:
Zune 30 Gig Vs. 8 Gig Zune?
I have seen the 30 gig zunes very cheap like around 0 and the 8 gig for around 0 is their a reason these are so much cheaper but still have larger memory. what are the differences??? the exact ones i'm talking about are http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Microsoft-Zune-30GB-Digital-Media-Player-Black-882224274579/sem/rpsm/oid/165773/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do for the 30 Gig and http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Microsoft-Zune-4GB-Digital-Media-Player-Black-882224519793/sem/rpsm/oid/194135/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do the 30 gig isnt the price i was talking about but i had seen some that price just couldnt remember were. so if yall know what makes them more or less expencive please tell me txs.

    • ANSWER:
it's simply because the generation... the 30gig you are looking at is the 1st generation zune and the 8gig is the 2nd gen there should also be a second gen 30gig released soon if not already. i imagine the 2nd gen has more functionality but the price is mainly because it's newer.

  9. QUESTION:
    ipod vs. zune HELP!!!?
I am looking to get a music player with no less then 120GB. I have it narrowed down to the IPOD classic and the Zune.

I am not going to be using any videos or pictures so these do not factor into the equation.

All of my CDs have been loaded onto my computer using windows media player.

    1. Can my library be transferred from windows media player directly to the ipod or zune?
If not, can the library be transferred to itunes-zune software or do I have to burn all of my CDs Again to itunes-zune software?

Can I transfer my play-lists from windows media player to the ipod-zune or to itunes-zune software?

How long do the batteries typically last? Are they easily replaced?

Which is easier to use? (menu navigation, scrolling through songs)

Do either have a significant load time with any function?

ANY help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
I have a Zune; first and foremost, do not listen to the people who say ipods are better. Zunes work just as well, if not better than ipods.

      1. Yes; you just drag your music onto the Zune software or you can change your settings so that your software picks up ALL music on your computer. You can burn or take songs off of a CD if you like.

2.As for playlists I am not 100% because I do not make playlists; you should go to zune.net to check.

      3. My Zune typically lasts for two or three days when I forget to charge it; which is all the time.

      4. Different Zunes work differently. I have the the 80GB and I can just softly run my finger over the navigating button and t goes up, down, or sideways. There are three buttons. The navigating button in the middle, and the back button on the left and the play or pause button on the right.

      5. Zunes do not have a load time. They come on automatically.

If you have anymore questions you can just ask me. If you do decide to get a Zune, add me on the Social!

I forgot to mention, with a Zune you get something called a Zune card. If displays your music, etc. You get awards for the certain amount of music you listen to etc. Here is mine

      http://social.zune.net/member/Helloyellowbird

Have fun! CHOOSE THE ZUNE. Be different for a change :) And if you do, get a Zune Original!

TO THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP SAYING THE ZUNE IS NEW; IT IS NOT. It has been out for a couple of YEARS. There are NO PROBLEMS with the Zunes. There are NO ERRORS and NO I have NEVER had a problem with my Zune and I have dropped it repeatedly on the floor. If you're the type of person that is clumsy, do not get the ipod because the screen is made out of plastic and scratches easily. Zunes are made to be DURABLE. The back is metal and the screen is THICK glass. You do not know how many times I have dropped it on the sidewalk or wooden floors and I still looks brand new. STOP SPREADING LIES ABOUT ZUNES.

    • ANSWER:
RT, my name is Rick and I work with the Windows Outreach Team. I can tell you some of the Features that make Zune an excellent choice. The Zune comes in 120gig version and will play Music, Video, Photos and everything you would expect from a Portable Media Player. One of the biggest advantages would be the built in FM tuner, this allows you to listen to radio as well as your music collection. If you’re a commuter like I am, than you can get your favorite local radio news or morning show on the same device. As a bonus the Zune allows you to tag songs you like that you have heard on the radio for download later. The Zune also allows for Wireless sync with your PC or Xbox and transfer you music without ever having to plug it in. You can also sync with other Zune owners and share music with anyone within your area that has a Zune. And in your case I am sorry but you do have to download the Zune software to manage your music. But it works easily and imports all your music files automatically if you wish into the Zune software. Probably the best option that the Zune offers is the Zune Pass, which is similar to Itunes as it allows you to download and purchase songs, but takes it a step farther and lets you access to any song on the Zune Market place for one small monthly fee to keep and hold on your Zune as long as you’re a member. It is like borrowing an entire music archive. Let me know if you have more specific questions.
      Rick

  11. QUESTION:
    iPod vs. Zune?
Poll: Which one is better? (or) Which one do you have, if you have either?

And for those that have a Zune, can you use Windows Media Player to put songs on it?

    • ANSWER:
      Zune is better

      Bigger screen
      Better battery life
      Customizable backgrounds
      Radio
      Wi-fi
      Optional Subscription Service
      Better earbuds
4 out of 6 people think Zune has better sound quality
      More durable
More colors to choose from (30GB models only)

iPod isn't a quality player and it's documented as such. Check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod#Criticisms

      Hope that helps...

  12. QUESTION:
    more questions: Ipod vs. Zune?
I have been wanting to upgrade to a video model and I'm torn between wanting a zune and sticking to Ipod. These are my questions to help me decide, I will give anyone who has the most information best answer:

    1. I have been researching Zune and it says that it comes with pre-loaded songs? If you connect it to the computer, does it erase the songs or does it put it on the computer?

    2. Is it true you can use Windows media player to put songs on Zune?

    3. When you plug it into your computer, does it charge Zune like Ipod does?

    4. What are your reasons for buying either Ipod or Zune?

    5. Are there other brands you prefer?

I'm looking for a model that plays WMV. movies, has a nice screen, and has other features such as Zune and Ipod.

    Thanks everyone!

    • ANSWER:
      1) The Zune has about 5-10 songs and videos pre-loaded on it. When you connect the Zune to the computer NOTHING happens the songs stay on the Zune

      2) NO. You have to use Zune Software to put songs on the Zune

      3) Yes

      4) iPod: It's the easiest to use. Zune: It's better than the iPod.

      5) None.

If you want a player that plays .WMV videos you MUST get the Zune, the iPod does NOT suppert WMV.

  13. QUESTION:
Ipod Vs. Zune: What do I choose?
Well, the other day, my 8GB Ipod Nano mysteriously started working again after 6-8 months. Of course, this also means I now own a 8GB Zune and 8GB Ipod Nano. Awesomeness!

Anyway, i'm debating on whether or not my next media player purchase will be a zune or a ipod. The main thing i'm wanting is size. And no, i'm not looking for an Ipod Touch or Zune HD, so that's out of the question.

The Ipod had a 160GB model, but is that worth the money, or are the 10 Models for the Ipod and Zune better?

    • ANSWER:
I, on the other hand, perfer the Zune 120. The screen is bigger, it has a radio, (IMO)the software and interface is better, wifi support for songs off marketplace straight from the zune, and better customization (ie zune originals). The only reason I see not to get it is if you have 160gb of media, want a lot of accessories, or just want to blend in. Zune originals is a custom engraved zune.
      https://zunestore.net/us/catalog/index.aspx
      Cnet also agrees with me.

  14. QUESTION:
    Ipod Video vs. Zune 120?
I use to have an ipod video, and it worked OKAY for me, although I did have many problems with it over time, until I lost it. And now I want to buy something with a different look, and not just buy an ipod because everyone else has it. Many people are saying that ipod is better, just because apple is more known, and not many people know what a zune is, but many of these people have never had a zune, and have only had experience with an ipod, so they can't really say which one is better since they've only had experience with one of the two. what do you think?

also, i have a few questions:
    1. is the ipod video just as fat as the zune 120 (thickness)?
    2. can you use music that you have downloaded from limewire to add to your zune, or do you only have to pay the 15 bucks per month to buy the music?
    3. do you have to use windows media player to sync for the zune, or does it have its one seperate program like itunes for ipods?

    thankyou!

    • ANSWER:
      1. the ipod 120GB is thinner and a little shorter than the Zune 120.

      2. you can use music downloaded from frostwire, limewire, amazon ect...it does not need to be downloaded from the zune marketplace. and the /month is an option...not manditory so you know...they also have buy by the track/album options like itunes has

      3. Zune uses the Zune software which is very nice looking...a bit of a memory hog but not terrible...my old computer has no problems running it.

I love my Zune 120GB....i have lots of movies on my zune to fill up the space and watching them on that tiny 2.5" ipod screen would be terrible...the 3.2" zune screen is massive compaired to the ipod screen. you also get better sound quality, more supported formats, better build materials, wireless marketplace, wireless zune to zune sharing, and wireless syncing....overall it is a better product....even Cnet agrees....the zune 120GB won the "prize fight" thing they do.

  15. QUESTION:
    ipod vs zune.... mp3 players?
i'm considering the ipod 5th gen. nano, zune, or some other type of mp3 player. problem is, i dont know much about them, i'd like to find one that can be docked to listen to... do u have to pay for itunes with ipod, because i have songs on my computer with windows media that i usually use.. thanks

    • ANSWER:
I say the ZuneHD, it has HD playback, an beautiful 3.1" OLED touchscreen, HD radio, Internet Explorer for internet browsing. Games, Music, Videos, Pictures, Apps, you name it. They are available in 16 (up to 4000 songs) and 32 GB (up to 8000 songs) models. They are priced at 9 and 9 for the two models.

Since you mainly use Windows Media Player (WMP), it will be very easy to switch from WMP to the Zune software since they both use the same file formats and etc.

If you go with the iPod all your music will have to be converted to ACC or MP3 to play on an iPod, with a Zune you wont have to do that. :D

  16. QUESTION:
    Zune vs. iPod question?
My friend wants either an Ipod or a Zune but she doesn't have a computer and wants to use mine to add songs to it. From what I understand about Ipod, it will sync to iTunes when updated, so the files must remain there or be taken off the iPod. I don't really want all her files on my computer at all times when she won't even update it that often. Does it work like that?

I used to have an old, generic mp3 player that you could simply add and delete mp3 files either through drag and drop or adding and deleting them using windows media player, and are therefore more independent of the files on the computer. What mp3 players out there now are more similar to this? Would a Zune do this, or would it be like the iPod?

    • ANSWER:
You don't have to keep all her songs with an iPod nor with a Zune, as long as iTunes or the Zune software is set to manually sync rather than auto-sync. I wouldn't assume, either, she won't be using your computer that often. If anything goes wrong with a player like these, she will be back on your computer wanting to put all those songs back on again, for example. Things go wrong with iPods all the time, and one thing I hate about Zunes is how even on manual sync sometimes songs end up deleted from my player (I think this is because of the Zune software, not the player, as the original Zune software never deleted songs from my player unless I wanted it to). Also, unless she buys a wall charger, she might want to use your computer to charge her player.

The kind of mp3 player out there that is just drag-and-drop are flash-based mp3 players. So, she could do an internet search for flash-based ones, which means they are almost like usb flash drives that happen to play music. I know there are Sansa mp3 players like this, because I looked specifically for that kind of player to buy for my father since they're way easier to use in all aspects than Zunes, iPods and other non-flash players. I got him a Sansa Clip. Zunes nor iPods are flash-based, so you have to use their software to put songs on.

  17. QUESTION:
Zune vs. Sansa View vs. Others?
I'm looking to get a new media player, and can't decide which.

    Here's what I'm looking for:
I want lots of space, bare minimum 8GB
I want a decent screen for video playback.
I want it to be compatible with a subscription based music pass (e.g. Zune Pass, Rhapsody)
    Price is DEFINITELY a factor.

I'm leading towards the Zune because of the ability to download songs directly from the Zune, but the Sansa View has a bigger screen. The Sansa is alot cheaper as well. I'm also considering a hard-drive based Zune, but they are really expensive. I'm in the sub-0 market.

So the question is Zune (8or16GB) with ZunePass. or SansaView (8or16GB) with Rhapsody, or another one with Rhapsody etc.

Zune Pass or Rhapsody? Which is better.

    • ANSWER:
Seems how price and screen size are you two biggest concerns, go with the cheaper mp3 player that has a bigger screen. Sounds like you want the SansaView. Personally, I'd go with the 16gb.

  18. QUESTION:
Zune vs iPod Touch for me?
They are both pretty even, and I kind of want a Touch more except it has limitations. I want to use my media player to play videos and various shows. I loathe iTunes, but I guess I could get used to it.

My question is how fast is sync'ing to the iPod touch? How much space would be sufficient for me if I get a Touch? Money is kinda a problem, and 8gb touch = 120 gb zune, I think I could go as high as 16 gb for the touch.

    Opinions?

Seems pretty unanimous. What is the sync times like? I have over 3 TB of video so I know I can't fit it all on. =P I would like to minimize the amount of time syncing, or at least keep whole series of a show on my touch. What size would you reccommend?

    • ANSWER:
I think you should go with the touch. I have the touch and it is excellent! I love itunes the syncing time is incredible, and it has a nice sleek design. I have two movies 160 songs and 7 or 8 music videos on my 8gb and I still have room to go.

  19. QUESTION:
    PSP vs Zune HD?!?!?!?
So i was looking at the zune HD and i got the idea of getting a PSP.
I just want a Reliable Media Player.

Can you tell me the features of both systems? -Ups and Downs
Also, Can you surf internet on the PSP

    • ANSWER:
yes the psp can surf the web.
but the zune hd does that, hd radio, hd video output, and will have apps.
i had a psp. the games arent very good.
      get the hd

  20. QUESTION:
    Zune HD vs. Ipod Touch?
Which media player is better? Rate on....

    *Apps
    *Music playback
    *Video playback
    *Customization
    *Interface

    • ANSWER:
      Apps
      - There are thousands of apps available on iTunes for the iPod Touch whereas there are only about forty for the Zune HD so far. Every single app for the Zune HD is free, but you have to pay for many of the apps on iTunes.

      Music playback
      - The Zune HD seems to have better audio quality than the iPod Touch but the difference probably isn't that noticeable if you're just using the stock earbuds.

      Video playback
      - Although the iPod Touch has a slightly larger screen, the Zune HD's OLED screen has a much clearer and brighter display which make it better for watching videos.

well first off you dont want to move it to windows media player... you need to move it to the Zune Media Player, which comes with your zune, or download it from zune.net.

and then you need to make sure your files are in mp3 format(or WMA), just not AAC. iTunes does a great job of converting files btw.

So go into the zune software and change your monitored folders to the ones where your music is stored and just let it add on its own...

Good Luck, I Love my zune, and you will too

  22. QUESTION:
    Zune or Ipod: owners opinions!?
You have one, I'm looking for one. I just don't know which one. So Specs aside, because I read all the specs, you tell me what you think. Your opinion, bias or not, I don't care; I want it. What you love, what you hate, what's missing, what's not. What sucks? What's great? I want it all. I wanted a special edition Ipod, it's not longer in production (Harry Potter) and now I want what I can swing with. I have an Xbox 360, I have Windows media, and I have Itunes. Tell me what's worth my money. Hook me up with the dirt!

Any questions for me and I will update to give you what ever info on me you need to help me make this decition. State your arguement with passion, sell me on your MP3 player. The company have had their say now I want to hear from real people.

  23. QUESTION:
    ipod vs. zune HELP!!!?

    • ANSWER:
      1. Directly to Zune, yes. iPod and iTunes don't support WMA though, they use the inferior AAC.

I think iTunes will convert some, but it won't be like the original. It's better to put it on a CD and rip.

      2. You can't transfer playlists to either, sorry.

      3. I think the Zune battery lasts longer than the iPods. Neither are easily replacable.

      4. I find the Zune's method is much quicker. It uses a neat crossbar UI so it's easy to jump across areas in the Zune's interface. The iPod Classic can lag a bit.

      5. Neither have a significant load time.

Overall, I'd just recommend the Zune.

    • ANSWER:
You don't have to rip your CDs again. The ipod supports both wmv and mp4s. It is very easy to load your existing library to either of the two.

I am not sure about playlits. Zune will be safer since I am sure Zune interfaces much better to wmp11 than the ipod.

On the ipod you CAN't replace the batteris. I am not sure about the Zune
